CILSS Meetings on Food Security Issues

The SWAC’s Rural Transformation & Sustainable Development Unit, represented by Mr. Jean Sibiri Zoundi, Head of Unit, and Mr. Léonidas Hitimana, Agro-economist, participated in a series of meetings on food security organised by the CILSS from 11 to 19 June 2007 in Bamako (Mali). These meetings enabled the Club to measure the extent of actors’ expectations vis-à-vis the SWAC as well as the implementation of joint priority initiatives set out in various co-operation frameworks that the Club has signed with its partners.

Meeting on the Establishment of the Regional Council on Food Security in West Africa (CORESA)

The SWAC moderated the meeting concerning the establishment of the Regional Council on Food Security in West Africa (CORESA). This Council should provide the region with a concerted action framework fostering synergy and complementarity among actors for sustainable food security in the Sahel and West Africa. At this meeting, which aimed to involve various actors in the initiative and to carry out a participative examination of the regional mechanism’s texts, a road map setting out the procedures to establish CORESA by December 2007 was adopted. Steering Committee of the Evaluation of the Food Aid Charter

The working sessions of the Steering Committee of the evaluation of the Food Aid Charter set out the review procedures and lay the groundwork for phase 2 of the project. During phase 2, participative debates will be held with all of the involved actors with a view to reaching consensus on the content of a "New" Food Aid Charter. The SWAC and the CILSS are currently preparing a file for this negotiation process.
