12/07/2007 - OECD is encouraging China to redouble efforts to improve its environment in order to achieve sustainable economic growth. The OECD shares Chinese authorities’ concerns about the country’s worsening environment and calls for state and territorial governments to strengthen enforcement of environmental policies and increase and diversify public and private sources of environmental finance.
The full OECD report on China’s environmental performance also encourages the government to reinforce its international environmental co-operation. China’s economic and industrial power has come at high cost to the environment. Rectifying that, says the report, would be good for China as well as setting a positive example to other countries.
The report, which makes 51 specific recommendations, builds on more than a decade of OECD-China co-operation and is based on the same review methodology used for environmental reviews of all OECD countries.
Mr. Mario AMANO, Deputy Secretary-General of OECD and Mr. ZHOU Jian, Vice Minister, SEPA will release the report at a news conference at 10am (Beijing time) on Tuesday 17 July 2007 at the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), N°115 Nanxiaojie, Xizhimennei, Beijing.
The OECD Environmental Performance Review of China is part of the OECD’s regular series of Environmental Performance Reviews of OECD member and selected non-member countries. To obtain a copy of the report, journalists are invited to contact the OECD's Media Division (tel. +33 1 45 24 97 00).
