Last month, OECD Development Centre Economist Federica Marzo and Head of Publications and Media Colm Foy took the 2008 African Economic Outlook (AEO) to the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs seminar "International Conference on Israel and the African Green Revolution". In her statement to meeting participants, Marzo outlined Africa's macroeconomic situation as reported in the 2008 African Economic Outlook (AEO) and what it means for the continent's agricultural sector. The meeting assembled hundreds of representatives from Israel and the international community to discuss approaches to agricultural development in Africa and how they might alleviate the current food and water crisis. Jeffrey Sachs, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General on Millennium Development Goals and Head of the Earth Institute at Columbia, presided over the conference. During his intervention he refered to the AEO as a "reference on Africa."
Israel is a new member of the Development Centre having joined in March 2008. Marzo and Foy also used the occasion to make inroads with key members of the Israeli government and civil society. During a brief discussion with the Israel Foreign Minister and Vice Prime Minister, Tzipi Livni, Foy offered an official welcome to the Centre and provided her with a copy of the 2008 AEO.
