Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs) constitute a dynamic, fast-moving field. The OECD Joint Working Party on Trade and Environment (JWPTE) has agreed to keep the issue on its agenda, to monitor trends and to promote policy dialogue on issues of mutual interest, including through the organisation of regional workshops.
Following a workshop held in Tokyo in June 2007 with an Asian focus, it was decided to hold one in Santiago, hosted by the Chilean government, on 6-7 October 2008. This workshop was open to representatives from OECD countries, as well as non-OECD Members, intergovernmental organisations and non-governmental organisations from the Americas region.
In addition to reviewing recent developments concerning environmental provisions in RTAs in the Americas, the workshop focused on provisions for environmental cooperation and capacity development in RTAs.
As the number of RTAs with environmental provisions increases, many countries are challenged to develop more strategic approaches to environmental cooperation and capacity development, so as to make best use of limited resources and more attention is being given to implementation and the assessment of the impacts of environmental provisions in RTAs.
Venue
The Workshop was held in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Santiago.
