The OECD Thematic Review on Migrant Education constitutes a project that was launched in January 2008 to support policy development by providing in-depth analysis of successful approaches to migrant education. Analysis from country information, synthesised research, and the organisation of expert meetings and conferences will contribute to the review. A first meeting of experts took place in January 2008 and two are forthcoming: October 2008 and 2009 (the time and date are to be confirmed).
First Meeting of Experts, Paris, 21-22 January 2008
The launch of the OECD Thematic Review on Migrant Education took place from 21-22 January 2008. The OECD Deputy Secretary-General, Aart de Geus, and the Director of the OECD Directorate for Education, Dr. Barbara Ischinger, made opening addresses. Experts from 22 countries and representatives from international organisations gathered to discuss the scope, process and expected outputs of the thematic review on migrant education, in particular addressing key policy questions, objectives and indicators.
The meeting also provided room for OECD experts from different directorates and divisions to present their work related to migrant education. Opportunities for cooperation and synergies were explored with representatives from the European Commission and the Council of Europe. Country representatives shared their experiences with policy evaluation in migrant education. To ensure effective dissemination of the project's findings, strategies for communication and dissemination were also explored. Read more about the meeting from the presentations made.
Second Meeting of Experts, Paris, 13-14 October 2008
The Second Meeting of the Group of National Experts brought together 58 participants representing 22 countries as well as international organisations and independent researchers. The meeting was designed to share experience, discuss additional research findings, hear about the progress made by other international organisations in the area and discuss the policy evaluation framework to be used for country reviews.
The OECD Secretariat reported on progress made in establishing a solid knowledge base for the review exercise. Country representatives reported on main findings from their national background reports and questionnaires on migrant education policies. The Group of National Experts commented on the usefulness of the preliminary knowledge base, noted related work by the OECD and other international organisations, and discussed alternatives for effective dissemination of project findings.
