Over the past decade, the now 38 States Parties to the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention – the 30 OECD member States and Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Estonia, Israel, Slovenia and South Africa – have implemented laws to criminalise foreign bribery and put in place policies and practices to effectively prevent, detect, investigate and prosecute this crime. But enforcement remains a challenge across the board.
On 9 December 2009, International Anti-Corruption Day, the OECD celebrates the 10th anniversary of the entry into force of the Convention with a high-level roundtable on 'Foreign Bribery: Who Pays the Price', followed by a two-part discussion on:
- enforcement and the link between the media and investigations
- major emerging economies in the fight against foreign bribery
The day’s discussions will include representatives from nongovernmental organisations, businesses, the media, and from nearly 40 governments.
The OECD is also developing an initiative to highlight the importance of combating foreign bribery, and to show its devastating impact. Based on partnerships with international organisations, NGOs, private-sector organisations and other key stakeholders in the international fight against foreign bribery, this international effort will complement Parties’ country-level efforts to raise awareness.
