International Trade by Commodity Statistics (ITCS)

This reliable source of yearly data covers a wide range of international statistics on foreign trade of OECD countries as well as Chinese Taipei and provides detailed exports and imports data on commodities and partner countries (with 280 individual areas and with economic and geographic groups) in terms of value (at current prices: thousand of USD) and quantity. Data are also provided for OECD main country groupings (OECD-Total, NAFTA, OECD-Asia and Pacific, OECD-Europe, EU-15, etc.).

OECD publishes also data received directly form the Statistical Office of the European Communities (EUROSTAT) under the name EU15 - Extra EU, which excludes Intra-EU trade (see definitions).

OECD publishes data using two different classifications of commodities:

HS is a more detailed classification with 6-digit subheadings, even when SITC has 5-digit headings. Since 1988, OECD receives data according to HS or in a more desegregated level. Data are then converted into SITC Rev. 3 and Rev. 2. From 1991, data may be obtained according to SITC Rev. 2, SITC Rev. 3. From 1996, data may be also obtained according to HS96. However, it should be noted that if it is easily feasible to convert data from a recent revision to an older one, the conversion from SITC Rev. 2 to SITC Rev. 3 is quite delicate, if not impossible. Consequently, to obtain a consistent time series, one should carefully choose which revision to use. Up to 1990 data are only available in SITC Rev. 2, which are contained in our Historical data CD-ROM in SITC Rev. 2.

The coverage for reporting countries, commodity detail, partner countries and classification used is different for the paper version and for the CD-ROMs or On-line versions:

The paper version of the database, which only shows data broken down by commodity according to SITC Rev. 3, Sections and Divisions (1- or 2- digits), is released annually in five volumes. Each of the first four volumes contains the tables for seven OECD countries that are published as they become available. The fifth volume includes the OECD main country groupings. Each table shows both imports and exports over the latest six-year period available by commodity with about one hundred partner countries or country groupings (e.g. NAFTA, etc.). (see paper publication samples above).

The electronic versions (5 DVDs or online access), which present data according to SITC Rev. 3, SITC Rev. 2 and HS at the most detailed level of the classifications used, are updated quarterly. Data are provided up to 2005 with almost 300  partner countries or partner country groups.
