The  Canadian Sustainability Indicators Network (CSIN) in collaboration with the  International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) are pleased to announce the  2nd National CSIN Conference on "Accountability through Measurement", in Toronto (Canada) on March 2-5, 2010.

The Foundation World Future Council  will host a Panel Series in January and February 2010,  on New Wellbeing measures and its relevance for the EU 2020 Strategy (New Lisbon Agenda) presenting the work of the Global Project on Measuring the Progress of Societies, read more.

2009 annual conference of the Statistics User Forum - Thursday, 19 November 2009 - This major conference in London, sponsored by the Royal Statistical Society's Statistics User Forum, brought together leading players, from the UK and overseas, to discuss "The measurement of progress". http://www.rss.org.uk/sufconference

Fao, IFAD, IAI and PAM were pleased to announce the 4th Annual Conference of the GARNET Network of Excellence (Global Governance, Regionalisation and Regulation: The Role of the EU) on the ‘Food Security and Sustainable Development: Challenges for the Governance of International Relations‘. It was placed in the Research Centre of International Economics (CIDEI) of Sapienza University of Rome (Italy), November 11-13, 2009.

The North West Wellbeing Conference, incorporating the 6th annual North West Public Health Conference and the 17th annual Conference of the WHO Regions for Health Network was placed on November 9 -10, 2009 in Manchester. Read the program.

The Future Vision Institute of Brazil and Italpu Binational was pleased to announce the 5th International Conference on Gross National Happiness "Gross National Happiness in Practise", 20-24 November 2009 in Foz de Ignaçu, Paraná (Brazil). Report from John de Graaf.

The Community Indicator Consortium was pleased to announce the conference on "Community Indicators as Tools for Social Change: Tracking Change and Increasing Accountability." which was held October 1-2, 2009 in Bellevue Washington, USA with optional training workshops on September 30th.
The Lisbon Council in collaboration with the Swedish EU Presidency hosted a meeting on The New Lisbon Agenda: A Roadmap for the 21st Century.
It took place from on 29 September in Brussels, Belgium.

The Community Indicators Declaration from the Community Indicators Summit in Brisbane, Australia July 2009, has now been finalised. The Declaration, endorsed collectively by delegates at the Summit, is available on www.nss.gov.au 

The Australian Bureau of Statistics in association with the Global Project hosted a Community Indicators Summit: Measuring the Progress of Australian Communities in Brisbane, Australia on July 22 - 23 2009.

International Society for Quality-of-Life Studies (ISQOLS) was pleased to announce the IX Conference of the International Society of Quality of Life Studies that was held from 19-23 July 2009 and there was also a workshop on  Measuring subjective well-being: an opportunity for National Statistical Offices? on the 23-24 July 2009, in Florence (Italy).

Innovative Approaches to Turn Statistics into Knowledge   July 15-16, 2009 was held in Washington, DC, USA. The OECD, the US Census Bureau, and the World Bank have sponsored this joint seminar which was about the art of making statistics understandable and appealing to modern audiences. Data designed for decisions conference was held in Paris on the 18-20 June 2009. Speakers and participants investigated selection, visualisation, interpretation and communication of data, and how it can be effectively used to take decision based on evidence, help understand complex issues, make data relevant at a personal level and close the gap between objective measurement and perception.

The Information Technologies and Communication Commission of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW) and the Fondation du Devenir in collaboration with Avenir suisse and the review La Chair et le Souffle, and the Global Project on Measuring the Progress of Societies are been pleased to announce the Round Table on "Progress and quality of life, Switzerland in 2029"  June 4-5, 2009 in Münchenwiler (Switzerland). More details.

The Institute for Studies and Economic Analyses (ISAE)  and the OECD hosted a Conference on Monitoring Italy 2009:  Measuring the Progress of Italian Society. on June 3rd and 4th, 2009 at the ISAE premises in Rome. Italy decided to launch a roundtable on progress.  Read more (PDF)

Italian Society of Economics Demography and Statistics (SIEDS) hosted the XLVI SIEDS Scientific Meeting on "Poverty and Social Exclusion"  on 29-30 May 2009,  at the University of Florence premises (Italy).

The OECD, UN-ESCWA and Paris 21 hosted the 4th Arab Forum on Statistical Capacity Building Conference on “Measuring the Progress of Arab Societies” May 27, 2009 in Cairo (Egypt)

The European User Conference for EU-LFS and EU-SILC, which was organised by the German Microdata Lab, GESIS, in cooperation with Eurostat, provided researchers who use these data with the opportunity to present and discuss their work and share their experience. The conference was held on 5-6 of March 2009, in Mannheim (Germany).

“Measuring and Fostering the Progress of Societies: Key Issues for the Asia and Pacific regions” , was held in Kyoto on March 23-24, 2009. 

Evidence-based policy: International experiences

On the 9th March 2009, the OECD and the National Research Council of the National Academies of the United States jointly hosted a conference in Paris (France) on the topic of “Evidence-based policy: International experiences”  which provided an opportunity to learn about international efforts to promote evidence-based policy. ICT for a global sustainable future” high-level conference - Brussels - Jan. 22-23, 2009    ICT can efficiently contribute to the achievement of the revised economic, social and environmental objectives which this future envisages. The event officially took place under the aegis of the European Commission and took advantage of the support of many leading organisations.                                     

The Statistical Data and Metadata Exchange (SDMX) initiative goal is to develop and promote technical standards, content-oriented guidelines and related implementation tools to foster greater efficiencies for the exchange of statistical information. The SDMX Global Conference 2009 was held on 19-21 January 2009.

The Social Cohesion Development Division of the Council of Europe in partnership with the OECD and the Autonomous Province of Trento (Italy) will hold a seminar on Involving citizens/ communities in measuring and fostering well-being and progress: towards new concepts and tools on the 27 and 28 November 2008 at the Palais de l’Europe, Strasbourg. The Australian Bureau of Statistics hosted the inaugural NatStats Conference 08 from 19 - 21 November 2008 in Melbourne.Working Together for an Informed Australian Society 

Australian ABS Declaration

Europe's biggest research event for information and communication technologies 08 organised by The European Commission's Directorate General Information Society and Media and hosted by the French Presidency of the European Union. It will be held in Lyon, France on the 25th – 27th of November.

First National Conference of FIB (Felicidade Interna Bruta) - Produto Interno Bruto (PIB) ou Felicidade Interna Bruta (FIB)? conference was held on the 29 and 31 October and on the 1st and 2nd November 2008 in Brazil.

 

Building together local indicators for societal progress conference was held in  Rennes, France on  30th -31st of October 2008. A joint OECD, Conseil General d’Ille et Vilaine, PEKEA, Région Bretagne and Council of Europe conference analysing new methods for the construction of local indicators through a participative process. The European Commission's Joint Research Centre and the OECD organised a two-day training course on composite indicators on October 20 and 21, 2008, in Bratislava.  The course, which was free, trained statisticians and researchers on composite indicator development and assessment. More Details

Monitoring the Quality of life in Latin America: the urban dimension a conference was held in Paris, France on the 26th of September 2008. This joint OECD and Inter-American Development Bank  (IADB) seminar analysing the resuls of a research project assessing efforts to improve the quality of life in Latin America's rapidly growing cities.

In Search of Sustainable Well-Being: Science and Technology for Sustainability 2008. The conference was held on 12th-13th of September 2008 in Tokyo.

CIC 2008 Conference - 26 and 28 June, USA 

Community Indicators Consortium Conference- CIC to be held on the  June 26-28 in Arlington, VA, USA.
Applied Survey Research (ASR) has been helping to organize this conference  about community indicator projects in the United States and around the world.
The focus of this year's CIC Conference is "Moving Information to Action."

Measuring Progress:What Behavioral Economics Tells Us About Economics, Finance and Politics

On the 4th of June 2008 Gallup CEO Jim Clifton will introduce the Gallup World Poll and show leaders how its key findings can help them anticipate major economic, political, and social trends. Drawing on the science of Behavioral Economics, the Gallup World Poll helps leaders move beyond traditional economic measures of progress, such as GDP, to understand -- and influence -- where the world is headed. 

 

International Seminar on Innovative Approaches to turning Statistics into Knowledge, Stockholm, 26-27 May, 2008

This Seminar jointly organised by Statistics Sweden and the OECD aims to contribute to the development of tools to help people transform statistics into knowledge and decisions. Held in the context of the OECD Global Project on “Measuring the Progress of Societies”, it should contribute to one of the goals quoted in the Istanbul Declaration: "produce a broader, shared, public understanding of changing conditions, while highlighting areas of significant change or inadequate knowledge".

Beyond GDP: Measuring progress, true wealth, and the well-being of nations - International Conference, 19-20 November 2007

Second World Forum: Istanbul 2007 - "Measuring and Fostering the Progress of Societies" 
The second World Forum on "Statistics, Knowledge and Policy" was held in Istanbul (Turkey), 27-30 June 2007. Attended by 1200 people from about 130 countries, the Istanbul World Forum has given a unique opportunity for in-depth discussions about the measurement of progress.
 

First international exhibition on innovative tools to transform information into knowledge
This exhibition has taken place during the OECD World Forum and gave the opportunity to organisations active in indicators and measures of progress to showcase their latest work, demonstrate innovative tools to disseminate data and promote new indicators.

Regional Conferences
Regional Conferences in 2006 and 2007 played an important role in informing the discussion at the World Forum in Istanbul. Regional "pre-conferences" are being held in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. 

Preparatory Workshop - International Conference “Is happiness measurable and what do those measures mean for policy?”.
This international conference took place April 2 and 3 at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”.

The OECD and the Italian National Statistical Institute (ISTAT) organised a seminar on "Dynamic Graphics for Presenting Statistical Indicators" on 5-6 March 2007 in Rome, Italy.

1st World Forum: Italy - Palermo 2004, "Key indicators to inform decision making"
The first world forum on "Statistics, Knowledge and Policy" was held in¨Palermo (Italy),  10-13 November 2004. Some 540 experts participated from forty-three countries and thousand of people followed the event through live Web-cast.
