The Workshop took place in Rome, Italy on 17-19 October 2009
The Workshop brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including officials of regulatory agencies, representatives of relevant regional or international organizations, researchers, patients’ organizations and representative from industry. The interdisciplinary nature of the Workshop was intended to stimulate dialogue and exchange of information on progress in the field, challenges and opportunities, including experiences in regulatory approaches.
Discussions at the Workshop showed examples of how pharmacogenetics was being used. In drug development, identification and use of pharmacogenetic biomarkers can assist in reducing the size and duration of clinical trials and reduce the numbers of prospective medicines which are discarded for reasons of lack of efficacy or excessive risk. In clinical practice, pharmacogenetics is increasing the tools available for evidence based health care. For example, oncology is emerging as a clinical specialty already looking to genetics and pharmacogenetics to provide knowledge, tools and understanding in order to improve all aspects of cancer drug discovery and development as well as clinical care.
