Sustainable development now lies at the heart of the strategic planning agenda of European metropolitan regions and areas. We now need to re-examine what planning means.

  • How can planning help to curb global warming and reduce the consumption of space, energy and resources?
  • What role can planning take in the uncertainty of the current global climate?
  • How can we ensure its successful implementation?
  • How can we improve evaluation and follow-up mechanisms in order to achieve better reactivity, in a context where governance is sometimes divided?

The workshop, organised jointly by the OECD, METREX, l'IAU Île-de-France and Région Île-de-France, will bring together strategic planning experts from more than 40 European metropolitan areas to share their experiences and discuss the challenges of sustainable development and planning.
