A specialist in the History of Spain in the first half of the 20th century, she is the author of several books and many publications as a result of her research work on this and several other themes. Among her books: “La patronal en la II República. Organizaciones y Estrategia (1931-1936); “Con luz y taquígrafos. El parlamento en la Restauración (1913-1923)” and “El poder de los empresarios. Política y economía en la España contemporánea 1875-2000”.
She has dedicated her life to research and teaching until she was elected Member of Parliament for the constituency of Madrid in the General Elections in March 2004. In Parliament she was chair of the Education and Science Committee until her appointment as Minister of Education and Science.
Mercedes Cabrera is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Pablo Iglesias Foundation and the Alternativas Foundation and she chairs the Amigos de la Residencia de Estudiantes Association. She is co-director of the journal “Historia y política”.
She was Director of the exhibition “Un siglo de la vida política y parlamentaria de España 1898-1998”, organized by the Spanish Senate in January 1998, as well as Director of the exhibition “Regeneración y reforma. España a comienzos del siglo XX”, organized by the BBVA Foundation and the Ministry for Education and Science in January 2002.
She was appointed Minister of Education and Science of Spain on 11th April 2006.
