Norway: Ambassador, Permanent Representative to the OECD

Mr. Harald NEPLE

In 1975 Mr. Neple entered the Ministry of Trade and Shipping prior to moving to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1977. Upon completion of the Ministry’s training course in 1980, he was appointed Second Secretary at the Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand. Then, from 1983 to 1986, Mr. Neple was posted to the Norwegian Embassy in London, United Kingdom, as Second Secretary specialising in energy and trade issues. Mr. Neple returned to Norway in 1986, serving at the Ministry as a Senior Executive Officer specialising in shipping and aviation. From 1988 to 1989, he was Senior Executive Officer dealing with trade policy. The focus of his work was on GATT and bilateral economic relations with the United States.

In 1989 he was appointed Special Project Coordinator for the Ministry at the GATT Uruguay Round. Subsequently, in 1992, he became Assistant Director General and head of the GATT section at the Ministry. In 1994 Mr. Neple was posted to the Norwegian Embassy in Tokyo, Japan asMinister-Counsellor.  Upon his return to Norway in 1998, he was promoted to the rank of Ambassador and was appointed Special Advisor dealing with human security issues. In 1999 Mr. Neple was appointed Chairman of the Committee of Senior Officials at the Council of Baltic Sea States. From 2000 to 2002 he held the position of Deputy Director General and head of the WTO/OECD section at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.   


Since 2002, until his posting as Permanent Representative of Norway to the OECD, Mr. Neple was Director General of the Department for Trade Policy, Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs.


Ambassador Neple took up his post at the OECD on 8 September 2006.
