In 2007-2008, the main focus of the work was to quantify nanotechnology, to report its fundamental characteristics (e.g. broad-based and multidisciplinary nature), and to identify key policy issues of concern to countries. The WPN work programme for 2009-2010 focuses on specific nanotechnology sub-areas, key issues and policy domains in order to more fully acknowledge the multifaceted nature of this emerging technology.
While the mandate of the WPN currently only extends to the end of 2009 (the same as the mandate of the CSTP), future planning is important and proposed activities to end-2010 are included. The aim in 2009 is to build on the information-gathering activities of 2007-2008 and to focus on policy advice and dissemination.
