OECD ministers to discuss how to boost citizens’ trust in government

16/11/2005 - What can politicians do to establish a stronger relationship of trust between citizens and government? This question will be at the heart of a one-day OECD ministerial conference on "Strengthening Trust in Government: What Role for Government in the 21st Century" in Rotterdam on Monday 28 November 2005.

Jointly organised with the Netherlands Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations and chaired by Minister for Government Reform and Kingdom Relations Alexander Pechtold, the conference will bring together ministers and senior officials from more than 30 OECD and non-OECD countries. Their objective will be to review ways to bolster public confidence, in particular by improving communications with citizens and continuing to modernise the public sector and improve the quality of public policies and services.

Participants will be asked to put forward proposals for specific actions that can boost confidence in government. In a parallel session, the same issues will be discussed by students from Rotterdam’s Erasmus University, and at 5.00 p.m. on Monday 28 November Mr. Pechtold will invite the students to present the results of their discussions by videolink.

Journalists are invited to a photo opportunity of the opening session and to follow the opening session, from 9.00 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. from a listening room. During this session, Mr. Pechtold and the Secretary General of the OECD, Donald J. Johnston, will make introductory statements, followed by a keynote speech by columnist William Pfaff. In the afternoon, journalists are invited to attend the closing session to hear the Statement by the Chair as well as the results of the parallel conference at Erasmus University at 5.00 p.m. and a press conference with Mr. Pechtold at 6.00 p.m. They are also welcome to attend the students’ conference.

To register, journalists are invited to visit www.oecd.org/mingov2005 and go to ‘Press’.  For further information, journalists are asked to contact Ruud Stijnman at the Netherlands Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (tel. + 31 70 426 66 48).  For further information, please contact Nicholas Bray, OECD's Media Relations Division (tel. + 33 1 45 24 80 90).

Financial crisis: Save our savings

Amid the worst current financial crisis since the 1930s, EU leaders have pledged to protect savers’ deposits. Already most OECD countries have explicit deposit insurance schemes for savings up to certain limits. In a number of countries these have now been raised temporarily.
