Faced with the challenge of climate change, tourism needs to adapt to its effects. It must also significantly de-carbonise its operations. While the sector’s overall current contribution to the global anthropogenic climate impact, is estimated to be 5%, in a business-as-usual scenario, global greenhouse gas emissions from tourism could more than double in the next 25 years. Despite some ambitious mitigation pledges, however, the tourism sector lacks strong climate policies. Policy-makers must now develop effective strategies, regulations and incentives that focus on its main sources of current and future emissions. These are among the central conclusions of the report jointly undertaken by the OECD and the United National Environment Programme (UNEP) entitled Climate Change and Tourism Policy in OECD Countries.
