The OECD's Role in the Heiligendamm L'Aquila Process

The OECD was asked in 2007 by the G8 to provide a platform for this initiative. With a core mission to improve the functioning of the global economy and its mandate to strengthen partnership with the major emerging economies, this was seen as an important opportunity for the OECD to reinforce its role as a hub for dialogue on global economic issues. The association with the HAP also acknowledges the OECDs extensive expertise in the substantive areas. As the relevant organisation in the field of energy efficiency, the IEA was asked to contribute to the Dialogue in this field.

In July 2007, the member countries approved the establishment of the Support Unit within the OECD. The Support Unit operates under the political guidance of the Steering Committee and the direct supervision of the OECD Secretary-General, who attends the Steering Committee. The Support Unit co-operates closely with OECD directorates, benefitting from the Organisation's vast expertise and knowledge.

In light of the outcomes of the Italian G8 in L’Aquila, the OECD Council agreed on 16 July 2009 to extend the mandate of the Support Unit in the OECD up to the French Summit in 2011.
