Altero Matteoli, Minister of the Environment and Land Protection
of the Republic of Italy
Born in Cècina (Leghorn, Italy) on September 8, 1940.
Member of the leading committee of Alleanza Nazionale since its foundation. AN is a center-
right political grouping, currently supporting the government coalition of Mr. Berlusconi,
which has been in power since May 2001.
Mr. Matteoli political career dates back to the 70’s. He has been an MP in the Italian
Parliament (Chamber of Deputies) for over 20 years, joining among others the committee for
transports and UE policies and acting as a rapporteur for the committee investigating on
mafia and criminal rackets . His electoral college is in Tuscany (Pisa, Leghorn, Massa
Carrara). He also has a long experience as a local administrator (city counselor in Leghorn
1970-85 and Castelnuovo Garfagnana 1985-90, regional counselor for Tuscany).
He was first appointed Minister of Environment in 1994 (first Berlusconi Government, 1994-
95), and reappointed to the same cabinet post in May 2001 (second Berlusconi Government,
2001).
In his earlier years Mr. Matteoli has been a corporate manager.
His hobbies are diving, jazz and good cinema.
Married, with two sons.
