Celebrating teachers and new ones at that!  (October 4, 2011)

World Teachers' Day, held every year on 5 October, was started by UNESCO in 1994. Today, 18 years later (long enough for a generation to have started and completed school), we join our colleagues in celebrating teachers the world over.

Effective teaching and teachers are key to producing high performing students. TALIS is the first international programme to focus on the learning environment and the working conditions of teachers in schools. TALIS fills important information gaps in the international comparisons of education systems. It offers an opportunity for teachers and school principals to give their input into education analysis and policy development in some key policy areas. Cross-country analysis from TALIS allows countries to identify other countries facing similar challenges and to learn from other policy approaches.

 

The first TALIS cycle  – TALIS 2008 – focused on lower secondary education teachers and was conducted in 24 countries across four continents. TALIS 2013 has a wider scope: it will have more than 30 countries or regions as participants.  TALIS 2013 will also give participating countries the option to survey teachers in elementary and upper secondary schools. Furthermore, countries can choose to conduct the TALIS 2013 in schools that participate in PISA 2012.
