Definition: The DAC defines aid to water supply and sanitation as including water resources policy, planning and programmes, water legislation and management, water resources development, water resources protection, water supply and use, sanitation (including solid waste management) and education and training in water supply and sanitation.

Metadata: The CRS Aid Activity database is estimated to cover 85-90% of DAC countries’ bilateral ODA for the water sector in 1990-95. From 1996 on the data are close to complete.
Note: The definition of aid for water supply and sanitation excludes dams and reservoirs primarily for irrigation and hydropower and activities related to river transport (classed under aid to agriculture, energy and transport respectively – see purpose codes 31140, 23065 and 21040).
