AKIS TSOHATZOPOULOS
Minister of Development, GREECE
In October 2001 Akis Tsohatzopoulos was appointed Minister of Development. The Ministry of Development encompasses the sectors of Industry-SMEs, Energy, Tourism, Trade, Research and Development.
Akis Tsohatzopoulos began his political career during the Junta period where he participated in the anti – dictatorship struggle and was active in the Panhellenic Liberation Movement (PAK).
After the fall of the dictatorship, A. Tsohatzopoulos became a founding member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and from 1974, continuously participated in the PASOK leading department.
During the first governing period of PASOK, from 1981 until 1989, Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou consecutively appointed Tsohatzopoulos to ministerial responsibilities in the sectors of Public Works, Employment, Internal Affairs, Public Order as well as special portfolios as Minister to the Prime Minister and to the Ministry of Presidency,
In 1989, he participated in the Ecumenical Government as Minister of Transportation and Communication.
After PASOK passed into opposition in November 1990 he was elected as Secretary of the Head Committee and maintained this position until the return of PASOK in the new government term, however during that time he also worked for the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In 1993, Tsohatzopoulos assumed the position of Minister of Internal Affairs with the new government.
In May 1994, he was re – elected as Secretary of the Head Committee of PASOK and held this position until 1995.
From September 1995, he was appointed to the newly - founded Ministry of Interior, Public Administration and Decentralization.
While from November 1995 until January 1996 Tsohatzopoulos became the representative for Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou.
In March 1996, he was elected as Vice President of the European Socialist Party (PES), a position that he retains up until today (2003).
During the new governing term of PASOK with Prime Minister Costas Simitis, from January 1996, Tsohatzopoulos was charged once again to the Ministry of Interior, Public Administration and Decentralization.
In September 1996 he became Minister of National Defense and held this position until October 2001. From October 2001 he was appointed Minister of Development and still honors this position to date (2003).
Akis Tsohatzopoulos was born in December 1939 in the city of Thessaloniki where he completed his secondary studies. He proceeded to study (Technical University) and work in Munich, Germany. In 1964, he obtained a Civil Engineering Degree and in 1967, completed a Master in Economical Engineering. He exercised his profession in engineering companies and research technical firms in Germany, and from 1975 until 1981 worked in his own Research and Supervision office in Greece.
A. Tsohatzopoulos has a daughter, Areti who is an Architect and his son, Alexis has completed his studies and is active in the field of industrial design.
