OECD Regional Forum: Maximising the Developmental Benefits of Trade Facilitation, 27-28 September 2006

The OECD Development Co-operation and Trade Directorates organised a Regional Forum on Trade Facilitation, in collaboration with the Government of Cameroon. The event took place in Yaoundé, Cameroon, on 27-28 September 2006.

Objectives

The purpose of this event was three-fold:

  • Exchange lessons learned from practical experiences with trade facilitation reforms and donor assistance for the latter;
  • Foster a national and regional dialogue around core policy and operational issues related to the WTO negotiations and, more generally, to trade facilitation reforms and donor assistance; and
  • Discuss completed and ongoing OECD work on trade facilitation with non-member countries.

Participants

The event brought together key public and private sector stakeholders involved in trade facilitation in Western and Central Africa – including delegates involved in WTO negotiations; policy makers and practitioners engaged in trade facilitation reforms on the ground; donors and multilateral and regional agencies providing assistance for trade facilitation; and private sector stakeholders contributing to reforms.

Background

This event was organised as part of the OECD DAC Project on Trade Facilitation and the Trade Committee work on trade facilitation.

The Regional Forum was undertaken as part of the OECD efforts to respond to the invitation extended by WTO Members to “assist Members in (the) process ... of identifying individual Members’ trade facilitation needs and priorities and the cost implications of possible measures” and to ensure that technical assistance and capacity building for trade facilitation is effective, operational and coherent (Annex D of the WTO July Package and Annex E of the WTO Hong Kong Ministerial Declaration).
