Social institutions are key to understanding gender equality. Although formal rights may be established, women in many countries do not have equal access to inheritance, they cannot own land or property, suffer from sexual assault or domestic violence, and need to be accompanied by a male member of the family when leaving the house.

Based on the Gender, Institutions and Development Data Base, the following map* shows inequalities in social institutions in the family code, property rights, physical integrity and civil liberties around the world. As indicated by the dark colours, inequalities are particularly pronounced in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and the Middle-East and North Africa.
