It’s 2017: migration is normal, let’s move the debate forward

With:

Marta Foresti

Managing Director, Managing Director, Overseas Development Institute (ODI)

Friday, 20 January 2017
09:30 to 11:00
OECD Headquarters – room E

2016 was yet another difficult year for global migration with a record number of deaths in the Mediterranean, mostly migrants and refugees from Africa, and unprecedented large influxes of refugees in many countries across the world. But 2016 was also the year that finally put migration and displacement on the global political agenda at the highest level. People have always moved, and will likely continue to do so. What we are seeing now is normal. So what does it mean for development policies?

Marta Foresti, ODI’s Managing Director, will present and discuss recent findings from ODI’s research and policy work on (i) the costs and effects of deterrence policies and their impact on migrants’ journeys and decision making, and (ii) the ways in which human mobility can enhance or hinder the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
