As a part of the “DEV TALKS” Series
Mario Pezzini, Director of the OECD Development Centre and Special Advisor to the OECD Secretary General on Development,
cordially invites you to a conversation on
Former Executive Secretary (United Nations Economic Commission on Africa - ECA), and
Head of the Division of Production, Productivity and Management (United Nations Economic Commission Latin America and the Caribbean - ECLAC)
The future of manufacturing and the next industrial revolution are in the spotlight. Addressing economic transformation as a result of new trends in globalisation and technologies is a key priority across regions. For instance, growing digitalisation and automation, and the upsurge of the “platform economy”, are coming together to shape an industrial landscape that marks a radical departure from industries as they were shaped in the past.
On this occasion, Carlos Lopes and Mario Cimoli will discuss the emerging challenges vis-à-vis industrial policy and economic transformation in Africa and Latin America. They will also share their views on: What will the manufacturing sector look like in the next 10 and 25 years? What will be the implications for the global organisation of production (i.e. localisation of FDI, geographic distribution of manufacturing, innovation hubs)? What will determine which countries and actors will benefit or strive? What are the policy spaces for the new industrial policy and how can countries prepare for the future?
This DEV Talks builds on the longstanding co-operation between the OECD Development Centre and the United Nations Economic Commissions on Africa (ECA) and Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). It is a follow-up to the Policy Dialogue “Africa and Latin America at a crossroads: Addressing Structural Transformation in the New Global Landscape”, held in Addis Ababa in December 2015, and draws on the policy dialogue process of the Transforming Economies Report 2017 (TER), an OECD-UNCTAD-ECA-ECLAC-ESCAP flagship publication on globalisation and economic transformation.
