Well-being around the world: going beyond GDP in measuring progress

More Info on the 4th World Forum in India

Building on the Better Life Initiative, the 4th OECD World Forum on Statistics, Knowledge and Policy will further discussions on the various components of a good life today and in the future in different countries including material conditions, quality of life, gender equality, minorities & life course perspectives, and sustainability. The Forum will promote the development and use of new measures of well-being for effective and accountable policy making, thereby contributing to the post-2015 development agenda.

For nearly a decade, the OECD has led international reflection on the measurement of well-being and progress. On 16-19 October 2012, the OECD will organise, jointly with the Government of India, the 4th OECD World Forum on the theme "Measuring Well-Being for Development and Policy Making". This Forum will add a global perspective to the conclusions of four regional conferences on Measuring Well-Being and Fostering the Progress of Societies organised by the OECD in association with the OECD Development Centre, PARIS21 and regional actors.

SAN JOSÉ: The Centre supports Costa Rican officials efforts on attracting knowledge-intensive FDI

Attracting knowledge-intensive FDI

The first report in the series Making Development Happen describes the achievements of the Costa Rican economy during the last decades. It assesses economic trends, current development strategy and policy mix for attracting Foreign Direct Investment. It identifies a roadmap for enhancing the policy framework to advance in the process of economic transformation.

The seminar took place in San José, Costa Rica on 31 July and was hosted by the Minister of Foreign Trade, Anabel Gonzales, and the Minister of Science and Technology, Alejandro Cruz, of Costa Rica. TUNIS: The Centre's work on 'Promoting Youth Employment in North Africa' supports interregional policy dialogue

The conference “Promoting Youth Employment in North Africa”, (Tunis, 16 July) highlighted the challenges and opportunities associated with North Africa’s large youth population. Jointly organised by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the OECD Development Centre, the conference convened 120 senior officials from North African and OECD countries, experts from the OECD, AfDB and other international organisations, and representatives of the private sector, universities and civil society. It focused on the findings and recommendations of the 2012 edition of the African Economic Outlook.

Ministers from North Africa and OECD countries shared policy approaches to addressing this common challenge. In his speech, the OECD Secretary-General called for urgent actions to create jobs, foster inclusive growth, reduce obstacles to SMEs, ensure a transparent and competitive business environment, and fight corruption. He also recommended that countries reform their education and training systems to address current skill mismatches and better respond to the needs of firms. Participants concluded that private sector growth, addressing the skills mismatch and supporting SMEs were key areas of actions.

MADRID: Thought leaders assess social cohesion in today’s economic context

A presentation of the second edition of the OECD's Perspectives on Global Development series, created the opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the 'shifting wealth' phenomenon – and in particular, its implications for social cohesion, poverty reduction, and European co-operation policies, with a special focus on Spain.

Rapid growth in emerging economies is also associated with increasing stresses to the social fabric, persisting vulnerability and high inequalities. In this situation social cohesion and the sustainability of long-term development prospects can be under threat. Participants called for an examination of development paradigms and the policy options for more equally shared progress.

The PGD series was presented by Mario Pezzini in Madrid on 12 July 2012, in co-operation with the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Public Policies and Administration (FIIAPP). Speakers included Jesús Gracia Aldaz (Spanish Secretary of State for International and Iberoamerican Co-operation) and Javier Quintana Navío (Director, FIIAPP).

MAPUTO: African Economic Outlook supports policy dialogue among Lusophone countries

In partnership with the Portuguese Institute for Development (IPAD), the Centre launched (for the first time) the Portuguese version of its African Economic Outlook (AEO) back-to-back with the IX Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) last 18 July in Maputo (Mozambique). The findings of the 2012 edition on “Promoting Youth Employment” were debated among distinguished panelists such as Mr. Luis Brites Pereira, Secretary of State for Foreign and Co-operation Affairs (Portugal), Henrique Banze, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs and Co-operation (Mozambique) and Mr. Domingos Simões Pereira, Executive Secretary of the CPLP.

16th Annual CAF Conference

While Latin America has so far largely managed to weather the effects of economic downturns in Europe and the United States, many question whether recent progress will continue. Poverty has been dramatically reduced, but there is much work to be done to ensure that growth is both equitable and sustainable. The Centre has shared its thoughts on the pending development challenges that will determine how Latin America fares during the next decade at the Sixteenth Annual CAF Conference, jointly sponsored by CAF – Development Bank of Latin America, the OAS, and the Inter-American Dialogue.
