DEV contributes to knowledge sharing between Italy and ASEAN countries

The Development Centre's work was central to discussions on increasing economic collaboration and understanding economic ties between the two regions.

Mario Pezzini, Director, and Annalisa Primi, Economist, participated in the ASEAN Awareness Forum co-organized by ASEAN and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Participants were interested in better understanding the economic ties between Italy and ASEAN countries. High-level representatives from ASEAN countries explored options to increase economic collaboration by strengthening networks for innovation.

The Centre offered its latest thinking on the regional economic outlook and policy challenges for Southeast Asia, and presented the preliminary findings of the Perspectives of Global Development Report 2013. The Forum served as a platform for dialogue by providing new policy insights on the relationship between ASEAN countries and Italy and key indicators on ASEAN economic performance. Among the potential areas for further economic co-operation, representatives from countries and international organizations discussed the idea of fostering a policy dialogue between countries involved in upgrading their participation in global value chains.

How to improve the effectiveness of public policies in Latin America?

The Latin American Economic Outlook was presented at the 5th anniversary of the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development of the Dominican Republic.

Sebastián Nieto Parra of the OECD Development Centre presented the flagship Latin American Economic Outlook 2012 in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). The presentation was held as part of the fifth anniversary of the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development on 14 March 2012.

The discussion centred on the effectiveness of public policies in Latin America. One key aspect of the discussion was the identification of main bottlenecks in education, infrastructure and innovation policies in the region and how they can foster economic growth and equality. Additionally, increased domestic resource mobilisation and a more progressive taxation system are crucial for countries to successfully meet the challenges of development and achieve higher living standards for all their people.

Juan Temístocles Montás, Minister of Economy, Planning and Development of the Dominican Republic, attended this presentation and Enmanuel Pinto Moreira, Chief Economist at the World Bank office in Dominican Republic commented on the report.
