The OECD/France conference Higher Education to 2030 was held on 8 and 9 December 2008 in Paris with a view to present and discuss possible and desirable futures for higher education.

This conference took stock of the lessons learned over the decade of "Schooling for Tomorrow" and looked ahead through the major trends impacting on the future. The conference was also an opportunity to learn about the Finnish experience with futures thinking in education complemented by visits to 21st century learning environments in and around Helsinki.

The new OECD book "Trends Shaping Education" looks at specific impacts on schooling of things happening elsewhere in our lives, from climate change and the growth of the Internet to changing lifestyles and family structures. Does the diversification of family forms mean a changing balance of responsibilities between the school and the home? And what is the impact on schooling of other phenomena, from the rise of obesity to the spread of mobile phones?

The consequences of these low foundation skills span the economic, health and social well-being of individuals, families and communities. Investment in this sector of adult education is therefore crucial. A new OECD report looks specifically inside the programmes for these adult learners, with a focus on formative assessment.
