Project on Future Global Shocks

17-Jan-2011

In this project, public and private experts explore how to increase resilience to Future Global Shocks. The Project will generate options for governments to enhance capacity to identify, anticipate, control, contain and/or mitigate large disasters. It recognises that shocks can provide opportunities for progress, not just negative consequences. Amongst the inputs from which the final report will draw are six background papers and case studies on the following themes: Systemic Financial Risk; Pandemics; Cyber Risks; Geomagnetic Storms; Social Unrest and Anticipating Extreme Events.

The review of Italian Civil Protection System

01-Sep-2010

Italy faces the broadest range of natural hazards amongst European countries. OECD reviewed Italy’s national system of civil protection to evaluate how these risks are assessed and monitored, how the public is kept informed about these risks, and how public authorities coordinate resources to manage large scale events. Attention was also given to implementation of prevention policies and strategies for disaster recovery. The review identifies best practices and opportunities for improvement based on international comparisons. More information here or contact jack.radisch@oecd.org.

OECD Studies in Risk Management – France

01-Sep-2010

Floods are the most costly natural disaster in France. In this case study OECD reviewed risk management policies in the Loire river basin focusing its enquiry on such issues as the use of collaborative governance, the extent to which non-structural policies are being implemented to complement the use of dikes and dams, the use of new technologies to improve early warning, and efforts to reduce the gap between the degree of risk of flood and the public’s perception of it.
