The new edition of OECD Input-Output database is available and includes 4 new countries. It is a useful empirical tool for economic research and structural analysis at international level. It highlights inter-industrial relationships and when used in conjunction with other OECD databases such as STAN Industry, Bilateral Trade Database (BTD) and Business R&D Expenditures (ANBERD), it provides a tool for consistent economic analysis of growth, structural change, productivity, competitiveness and employment at the sectoral and macroeconomic levels.

The new STAN Bilateral Trade Database (the 2008 edition) is available. It includes annual values of exports and imports for all OECD countries and a selection of Non Members as reporters. Data are presented in US dollars and broken down by partner and by industry for the years 1988-2006.

New STAN tables have been added. The December 2008 version provides data for 26 countries, of which 12 with time series up to 2007. Tables for other countries will be added as they become available.

The present edition constitutes the 2007-2008 update of the wide range of indicators which were published in 2006 but also includes new indicators and provides notes as to the measurement challenges and the data choices that were made.

Economic globalisation has typically been measured using trade and FDI statistics. However, the emergence of global value chains with products often fabricated in one country, assembled in a second and sold in a third country, challenges these traditional indicators. This paper shows how international input-output tables can be used to provide complementary indicators on the growing importance of these global value chains.
