Disasters strike Asia and the Pacific - What can evaluation tell us about the best ways to respond?

The tsunamis that hit Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga, Typhoon Kesanta in the Philippines and Mekong region, and recent earthquakes in Indonesia are salient reminders of the need to better integrate disaster risk reduction into development practices. As relief efforts start up, evaluations of past disaster responses can provide informative lessons.

What evaluation tells us about Gender Equality and Women in development?

Evaluation tells us  that more attention needs to be given to gender equality issues in evaluations of development activities. While more thematic evaluations of gender equality and women’s empowerment are now taking place, progress in incorporating gender perspectives into general evaluations of development assistance has been slow and uneven.

The Synthesis report of the evaluation of the implementation of the Paris Declaration is now available

The Synthesis and the individual partner country and donor agency studies are all posted on the homepage of the DAC Network on Development Evaluation. This report is an early evaluation and focuses on ways of improving and enhancing implementation, rather than giving any definite judgement about effectiveness.  The findings of the report will be presented at the Third High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Accra in September 2008.

Arabic Glossary of Key Terms in Evaluation and Results Based Management

The DAC Glossary of Key Terms in Evaluation and Results Based Management has been published in Arabic, in collaboration with the evaluation departments of the African Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, and the DAC Evaluation Network. The glossary is now available in thirteen languages. It is expected that the glossary will facilitate and improve dialogue and understanding among those involved in development evaluation. It should serve as a valuable reference guide in practical development work as well as in evaluation training.

Draft Guidance on Evaluating Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding Activities

As growing shares of aid resources, time and energy are being devoted to preventing conflict and building peace, more evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of these activities is essential. To support lesson learning and improve impact, a draft guidance on evaluating these activities has been developed. During an application period all those interested are encouraged to use the guidance and provide feedback on experiences. Feedback will be a valuable input to the final product.

Fact sheet on the Evaluation of the Implementation of the Paris Declaration

The overall purpose of the evaluation of the Paris Declaration is to assess the relevance and effectiveness of the Declaration and its contribution to development aid. The evaluation will consider qualitative aspects, building on and complementing the quantitative information obtained through the monitoring of the Paris Declaration. The first phase of the evaluation process is underway and is expected to be completed in 2008.
