Shipbuilding

The Council Working Party on Shipbuilding (WP6) seeks to progressively establish normal competitive conditions in the industry. It encourages transparency through data collection and analysis, and seeks to expand policy dialogue with non-OECD economies that have significant shipbuilding industries.

The Working Party is chaired by Ambassador Tore Eriksen, Permanent Representative of Norway to the OECD.

This report covers the analysis of environmental and climate change issues affecting the shipbuilding industry. It suggests and that a more holistic, “whole of life” approach to the production, operation and eventual recycling of ships could produce better environmental outcomes as well as potentially positive commercial outcomes. 

OECD Workshop on Market Distorting Factors in the Shipbuilding Sector

The Workshop gathered OECD members countries and non-member economies, such as Brazil, Romania, Chinese Taipei and Ukraine, as well as industry representatives. The objective was to undertake a fact-finding exercise to assess factors distorting the shipbuilding sector.

Fall in shipbuilding set to continue for some time, says OECD Council Working Party on Shipbuilding

The economic downturn has hit shipbuilding hard.  New orders have contracted by up to 90% and cancellations have increased, which is likely to result in significant excess shipbuilding capacity.  This outlook is unlikely to improve for some time.

Revised Understanding on Export Credits for Ships (SSU)

This Sector Understanding sets common rules for government supported export credits for ships, in particular concerning interest rates and the duration of credits. The latest update of the SSU came into force in July 2008.
