Social and legal discrimination against women remains a major obstacle to economic development in emerging and developing countries, according to the latest edition of OECD’s Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI). Though women’s rights are improving in a number of countries, in others women are still barred from contributing to the social and economic well-being of their families.

Developing Asia is forecast to grow by 7.2% in 2011, 6.9% in 2012 and 7.3% in 2013. The greatest risk to Asia’s outlook is the continued uncertainty in Europe’s sovereign debt problems. Raising living standards and reducing poverty should be a priority in the years to come to ensure that benefits of growth are widely shared.

This Quarter in Asia: Growth in Asia Weak with Signs of Improvements

Growth in Asia will remain weak in the coming months but improvements can be seen in several countries. Positive signs, related to stable domestic demand notably in Indonesia, mitigate effects of global economic turmoil. Global uncertainty – mainly from the Eurozone – is a major risk for the region, more so for export-dependents such as Singapore and Malaysia. Growth in China and India remain weak and signs of weakening domestic demand in China is a major concern.

Jointly organised by the OECD Development Centre and the High Commission for Planning of Morocco in collaboration with the OECD Statistics Directorate, The Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (PARIS21), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), it gathered around 250 regional policy makers, statisticians, academics and other stakeholders with a specific interest in the field.

DEV Working Paper No. 309: Making Reform Happen in Colombia: The process of Regional Transfer Reform

This paper studies the interaction between different actors in the policy-making process of fiscal transfer reform in Colombia, using the “life cycle of reform” framework to analyse this reform and following critical phases in the process. This paper shows that the economic context and institutional factors, such as the new political structure for interactions between agents after the 1991 Constitution, were fundamental in achieving the reform. Moreover, it confirms previous studies showing that communication and compensation strategies play a key role in the approval of reforms.

This paper studies sources of technological upgrading in China and India. China and India's export products associated with a productivity level much higher than a country at their income level. China is now the largest exporter of high-technology products in the world, while India has been more successful in exports of business and information technology services. It presents empirical evidence on the important role of FDI inflows and imported capital goods that embody new technology for TFP growth in a large panel of advanced and developing countries.

Labour disputes have intensified in China in recent years, alongside the labour shortages and wage inflation, particularly since 2008 when several Chinese labour related laws were issued or updated.

Tackling the Policy Challenges of Migration: Regulation, Integration, Development – Book Launch, Washington D.C., 17 November 2011

The conference will gather experts and policy makers sharing research and experience, ranging from local to global initiatives, and marks the launch of a new book by the OECD Development Centre: "Tackling the Policy Challenges of Migration: Regulation, Integration, Development." The book is the result of a three-year project on Effective Partnerships for Better Migration Management and Development, funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. 11th International Economic Forum on Africa

The International Economic Forum on Africa, organised by the OECD Development Centre with the African Development Bank, the UN Commission for Africa and the UNDP has grown to become the largest annual public event on Africa in Europe. Africa should embrace new economic giants and boost social inclusion, says African Economic Outlook 2011

African countries should develop closer cross-border ties in dealing with traditional and emerging partners so they can boost sustainable and inclusive growth, according to the African Economic Outlook 2011, launched today.

Africa´s economies have weathered the global crisis relatively well and have rebounded in 2010. Recent political events in North Africa and high food and fuel prices are likely to slow the continent’s growth down to 3.7 percent in 2011. During this year, sub-Saharan Africa will grow faster than North Africa. The new report predicts a rebound to 5.8 percent in 2012.

InnovaLatino.org launched in Madrid to report on innovation in Latin America

InnovaLatino.org is the result of a joint study between INSEAD and the OECD Development Centre with the support of Fundación Telefónica. The report is based on a survey of 1500 manufacturers highlighting innovative business models and marketing methods in Latin America.
