As part of its foresight mission and analysis of emerging sectors, the OECD IFP has launched a Space Forum to help space agencies and governments take stock of the opportunities and challenges of the space sector. The Forum's mission is to investigate the economic dimensions and implications of the space infrastructure for the larger economy.

OECD / IFP Meeting to explore the role of space technologies in food security, on November 6th 2009
02-Nov-2009
The meeting will regroup experts from different organisations and industries to discuss trends and challenges in global food supplies, and examine the potential role of selected space applications. These space applications increasingly include remote sensing (e.g. imagery for agriculture monitoring) but also satellite communications and navigation (e.g. use of GPS supporting fisheries and sea transport). Fourth Meeting of the OECD / IFP Space Forum's Steering Group
12-May-2009
The Steering Group of the OECD / IFP Forum on Space Economics met in OECD, Paris on June 12th, 2009. Following recent work on the contributions of space technologies towards climate change management (OECD publication: “Space Technologies and Climate Change”), a new case study was launched to take stock of the role of space applications in global food supplies (e.g. crop monitoring from space). In addition, building on the Secretariat’s findings, a new and enriched version of the OECD publication “The Space Economy at a Glance” will be published in 2010.

Second meeting the IAF Technical Committee on the space economy (17 March 2009)
In early 2008, the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) asked the OECD/IFP to chair a new IAF Technical Committee, focusing on the economic aspects of space activities. After receiving positive feedbacks from its Space Forum members, the IFP accepted the invitation. The Committee assembles for the first time economists and other actors active in the economic analysis of the space sector (e.g. strategy departments) to allow international discussions on measurement issues (size of sector, impacts). The second meeting took place in Paris, in March 2009. Read the summary of discussions .
