MENA-OECD Ministerial Conference in Marrakech will tackle reforms for development, growth, and employment

Amid a world economic crisis that has cut growth and sent inward investment reeling, government ministers and business leaders from Arab countries will meet their OECD counterparts in Marrakech on 22-23 November 2009 to discuss ways to boost employment, spur investment, strengthen governance, and tackle poverty in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

On 24 November, OECD will publish the 2009 edition of its annual Revenue Statistics, which presents detailed comparable tax data in a common format for OECD countries from 1965 onwards. The economic recovery now spreading across OECD countries is still too timid to halt the continuing rise in unemployment, according to the OECD’s latest Economic Outlook. The jobless rate is expected to peak in the first half of 2010 in the US, but it may not be until 2011 that unemployment begins to fall in the Euro area.

The squeeze on public budgets in the wake of the economic crisis is driving governments to rethink their approach to online government services or “e-government” as public authorities seek increased efficiency, according to new OECD analysis.

Unit labour costs rise strongly across OECD economies in second quarter 2009

Unit Labour Costs (ULC) for the total economy grew 0.8% in OECD countries in the second quarter of 2009 and rose 3.6% year-on-year. The strong growth was largely driven by falls in real output (gross domestic product at constant prices) due to the crisis.

Singapore signs its 12th tax agreement meeting the OECD standard

Singapore has today signed a protocol with France that brings the two countries’ bilateral tax treaty into line with the OECD standard on transparency and exchange of information for tax purposes. This being the 12th agreement that it has signed in accordance with the OECD standard, Singapore moves into the category of jurisdictions deemed to have substantially implemented the standard.

Unemployment rate stable at 8.6% in September 2009

The unemployment rate for the OECD area was 8.6% in September 2009, the same as the previous month and 2.3 percentage points higher than a year earlier.

Switzerland’s aid volume was USD 2.02 billion in 2008 (2.19 billion CHF), an increase of more than 6% over the previous year, and a total of 0.421% of its gross national income (GNI).
