Employment and Skills Strategies in Southeast Asia (ESSSA)

Southeast Asia is confronted with significant labour market challenges. The region is growing at a rapid pace, industry is becoming more diversified, and job requirements are demanding more complex and sophisticated skills. This initiative aims to address the issues of employment and skills, especially through an interaction platform for members.

6th annual meeting of OECD LEED Forum on partnerships and local governance

The 6th Annual Meeting brought together over 200 representatives to review how local development actors are adapting to the new reality that unemployment will remain high for the years to come despite the first signs of economic recovery. Participants debated emerging innovations to these new challenges & presented the key messages from six thematic workshops.

OECD LEED study on "Managing flexibility and accountability"

A variety of LEED studies have determined that more flexibility in the management of programmes is required for labour market policy to contribute fully to local strategies for economic growth and social inclusion. The LEED is implementing this new study on “Managing accountability and flexibility” to build on these findings and explore ways of allowing policy makers to inject greater flexibility into the management of employment policy at the local level while ensuring full accountability in relation to meeting national policy goals.

 

New OECD LEED project on “Skills for competitiveness”

OECD research shows that to be successful in today’s knowledge economy, communities need to invest not only in the supply of skills but also in the demand for skills. The OECD LEED has begun work on the “Skills for Competitiveness” project to further examine the advantages of such demand-side policy interventions.  The project will evaluate the policy and practice in LEED member countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom and Italy, and will also draw on good practice from across the world through an international literature review.
