Background

The Statistical Data and Metadata Exchange (SDMX) initiative is sponsored by the BIS, ECB, Eurostat, IMF, OECD, UN and the World Bank. The goal of the initiative is to develop and promote technical standards, content-oriented guidelines and related implementation tools to foster greater efficiencies and reduce reporting burden associated with the exchange of statistical information. These standards are now well established and recognised as an ISO technical specification. At its 2008 meeting, the UN Statistical Commission agreed to recommend SDMX as preferred standard for exchange and sharing of statistical data and metadata.

Purpose

Main issues discussed in the conference are the SDMX standards and guidelines and their implementation at international and national level. In addition, workshops were organised aimed at increasing the knowledge of SDMX at all levels. The first SDMX Global Conference took place in Washington on 9-11 January 2007.

Target Audience

The conference gathered a diversified audience of people interested in SDMX from different angles: Statisticians, technical experts and decision makers from national and international statistical organisations; users of statistics; redistributors of statistics; software vendors.

Global Survey

As the conference aimed to throw light on the actual and planned use of the standards and recommendations in national and international organisations in official statistics, the sponsors decided to carry out a survey among these organisations.
