Innovation shifting to emerging markets?
When China’s Tianhe-1A supercomputer with its peak speed of 2.57 petaflops was confirmed as the most powerful computer in the world in November 2010, outpacing the previous leader, the US XTC Jaguar, it was more than a breakthrough for computing. It was a further sign that the geography of global growth, which had already been shifting to emerging markets for quality manufacturing and some IT services, was on the move for knowledge and innovation as well.

Money alone won’t make Europe innovative
“Innovation” is one of the buzzwords of the moment, as this blog noted last week. That makes sense: Post-recession economies need a kick-start, and bright new ideas in science and technology could give them just that. Indeed, compared to labour or monetary policy, innovation’s role as an economic driver is probably underappreciated. But if we think of innovation as just a buzzword, nothing much will change. Simply setting targets for increased research and development (R&D) spending won’t achieve results unless they’re accompanied by deep structural changes in our economies. Read more
Can we meet the innovation challenge?
Some interesting thoughts from the Financial Times’ John Gapper on the innovation challenge facing governments in the wake of the recession. Referring to the OECD’s Andy Wyckoff , he notes that “countries such as Finland and South Korea responded to past economic crises by investing in education and R&D”. Indeed, he says, “everyone has an innovation policy these days”. But does the reality match up to the rhetoric – are government policies really doing enough to promote “the industries of tomorrow” (as they called them back in the ’60s)? Read more

Green Growth: We must prepare an agenda for action

The workshop brought together policymakers and experts across OECD and partner countries, as well as a range of stakeholders from international organisations, business and civil society. In this post, OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría looks at the issues workshop participants discussed. Green Growth Strategies: A framework for the future, and the present
On the second day of the OECD Green Growth Strategy Workshop. We asked Nathalie Girouard, the Green Growth Strategy Co-ordinator, for her views on some of the topics being discussed. What is a green growth strategy and why do we need one?
Nathalie Girouard: The aim of a green growth strategy is to provide a clear framework for how countries can achieve economic growth and development while at the same time preventing costly environmental degradation, climate change and inefficient use of natural resources. Read More |
