Welcome
to the first issue of the CERI Update
Why are we launching this?
- First, and obviously, we’d like more people to know about
what we do now, and are planning for the future.
- Secondly,
we’d like to hear back from readers about what interests you
in our programme, and about what use you make of our
work.
- Thirdly,
we are always looking for new ideas, and for links to
researchers or communities we might not know about.
CERI Update aims to keep you informed
about our activities, publications, events and analyses. You can
also use our website, www.oecd.org/edu/ceri, to
get more information.
CERI Update will be published regularly, as and when we
have enough new material.
With all good wishes Tom Schuller, Head of
CERI
CERI: self-portrait
Looking ahead, developing scenarios, analysing emerging issues,
searching for best practices and methods that work, producing
indicators in special fields: this is how the OECD's Centre for
Educational Research and Innovation – CERI
– contributes to OECD's work on education.
Set up in 1968,
CERI has established a worldwide reputation for opening up new areas
of exploration in education. Linking research, policy and
innovation, and drawing on extensive expertise and methodologies
from across the OECD world, the centre occupies a unique place in
international educational policy analysis.
CERI's work is
designed for all educational stakeholders, in particular policy
makers, research communities and school/university leaders.
Currently it is focusing on four key themes, all articulated around the
general objective of lifelong learning.
The centre is
composed of around 25
staff members, including economists, policy analysts, social
scientists, statisticians and assistants. It is located at the OECD
Headquarters in Paris.
Focus on: innovations in
learning
Several activities are looking into
innovative learning practices and developments in OECD countries:
- A review of best examples of policies and practices in formative assessment
- A project on how brain processes information, and on how learning
mechanisms develop over lifecycle
- An international survey of e-learning practices and strategies in tertiary
education
- A mapping of the scale and scope of current initiatives in open educational resources
