Recommended uses and limitations
Changes over the last two decades in the economic structure at most OECD countries have resulted in the need for reliable and comparable statistics in traditional activities of the industrial sectors as well as in growing areas of the economy such as services.

The Structural Statistics for Industry and services (SSIS) publication provides detailed annual statistics on a number of structural variables for industry and services sectors. SSIS data directly derived from censuses, exhaustive surveys or sample surveys facilitate an assesment of the evolution of the economic structure of OECD Member countries.

For the sake of harmonisation and improvement of the coherence of structural data, collected and published by international organisations, and in order to ease international comparisons of these data, the standard definitions of variables collected by OECD in the framework of the database SSIS have been reviewed together with Eurostat.

For some countries, definitions can show differences or deviations from the standard definitions. It is therefore essential to consult detailed methodological information which includes the exact definitions of variables as provided to the Secretariat by its Member countries in reply to the OECD methodological survey.
