| OECD statistics on industry and services | |
| The OECD Secretariat collects a wide range
of statistics on industry and services, mostly under the
auspices of the Statistical Working Party of the
Committee on Industry and Business Environment (CIBE). More detailed annual data derived from business surveys, covering a number of structural variables are published in Structural Statistics for Industry and Services (SSIS) . A forthcoming database, Statistics on Enterprises by Size Class (SEC) is reaching completion and will provide detailed structural data by size class of enterprises or establishments. The OECD Database for Structural Analysis (STAN) , based on SSIS, was developed to ensure international comparability of survey-based national industrial statistics as well as their compatibility with national accounts. It contains structural variables for a more limited number of variables and OECD countries. Specific annual data relating to service activities is provided by the OECD Statistics on International Trade in Services database. Economic trends and structural shifts, presented in numerous detailed statistical tables and graphs, are examined in two other OECD publications, issued alternatively every two years, OECD STI Outlook and Industry and Technology: Scoreboard of Indicators for use by policy makers and analysts. Output from the computerised statistical databases is available both as printed publications, and in computer-readable form such as CD-ROM and on internet at www.sourceoecd.org. |

| Process of Data Collection | |
| The United Nations Statistical Commission,
at its twenty-seventh session, recommended that OECD, in
collaboration with the United
Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), takes responsibility for
the collection and dissemination of world-wide industrial
statistics. The collection of industrial statistics
through a joint OECD/UNIDO questionnaire is now
co-ordinated with UNIDO as part of an on-going joint
effort to collect world-wide data for this sector. Following the recommendations of the Statistical Working Party of the Committee on Industry and Business Environment (SWIC), at its December 2002 session, the OECD and Eurostat secretariats have agreed to source directly from Eurostat variables common to both organisations. This agreement will come into effect in 2003 starting with data for the year 2001. The intention of this agreement is to reduce the response burden of Member countries while at the same time harmonising the data published by both organisations. Furthermore, to meet the needs of analysts for comparable data on emerging areas of economic activity, in particular, on services sectors, and with the endorsement of the SWIC, the OECD has extended the coverage of its collection of structural business statistics to service activities, according to the International Standard Industry Classification (ISIC) Revision 3. |
|
| Methodological Notes | |
| Statistics relate to data derived directly
from censuses, exhaustive surveys and sample surveys
conducted by national statistical organisations in all
sectors of the economy. They are presented according to
the International Standard Industrial Classification, ISIC Revision 3 (adopted in February 1989 by the
UNO - Statistical Papers, Series M, No. 4,
Rev. 3, New York, 1990). ISIC Revision 2 (adopted in 1968 by the United Nations Organisation, UNO - Statistical Papers, Series M, No. 4, Rev. 2, Add. 1, New York, 1971) data are not presented any more in the paper publication but are still available on electronic versions. However, they have no more been updated since 2000. |
