Women’s economic empowerment
Women's economic empowerment is a prerequisite for sustainable development and for achieving the Millennium Development Goals. It is also a fundamental right. There is no quick fix: women’s economic empowerment will require sound public policies, holistic approaches and long-term commitments from all development actors, including increased investment.

Funding gender equality
In 2009-10, the aid spent by DAC members on gender equality amounted USD 25 billion a year (annual average). Among DAC members, Germany gave the highest volume of gender equality focussed aid, followed by the United Kingdom, France and Australia. We analyse data reported by DAC members on aid targeting gender equality, breaking the data down by sector and donor.
