In support of the UN MDG Summit and Special Session on the International Year of Biodiversity, the OECD co-organised a high-level event to demonstrate the vital contribution of local organisations and action to sustaining and restoring biodiversity and ecosystem services, strengthening resilience to climate change and achieving the MDGs.
Specific objectives include:
- Making the investment case for supporting and scaling up local solutions to ecosystem decline, climate change and poverty as a means for accelerating and sustaining MDG progress.
- Celebrating local success by recognising Equator Prize winners and shining a spotlight on the achievements of these local and indigenous communities that are leading innovative work in biodiversity conservation, poverty reduction, and adaptation to climate change.
- Mobilising political will and consensus on supportive policies and investment priorities for scaling up local and indigenous best practice to inform the MDG Summit and follow-up action agenda for accelerating MDG progress.
