Improving social cohesion in Latin America: making the most of globalisation

While the global economy has created immense opportunities for Latin America, it has not reduced deep inequalities. In his remarks at a Euro-Latin American Forum in Paris, OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría stressed that improvement in three crucial areas of public policy -fiscal policy, education and regional development- can foster social cohesion in the region.

The economic impact of climate change, rising food prices and a broad range of other trade, growth and development issues were discussed at the OECD’s annual ministerial meeting in Paris on 4-5 June 2008. Ministers from Brazil, China, India, Indonesia and South Africa have been invited to attend the ministerial meeting, as have ministers from Chile, Estonia, Israel, Russia and Slovenia, the five candidate countries for accession to OECD.
