OECD Secretary-General welcomes signing of Colombian ceasefire

23/6/2016 - OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría welcomed the signing of the ceasefire that took place today in Havana, Cuba, between the Colombian government and the country’s largest rebel group, the FARC, ending more than half a century of armed conflict.

“We celebrate this historic landmark in Colombia’s peace process, as well as the roadmap for the guerrilla’s demobilisation announced today,” said Mr. Gurría. “I would like to commend President Santos’ personal leadership throughout the negotiations that have taken place during the past four years – if we can talk today about the end of Latin America’s longest lasting armed conflict it is thanks to the President’s determination and his unwavering belief in dialogue.

Today’s signing will enhance Colombia’s accession process to the OECD, which was initiated in 2013. I firmly believe that the peace dividend will allow the country to better confront its economic and social challenges and will allow it to join the Organisation in the not-so distant future. The OECD stands ready to support Colombians in making peace and progress a durable reality.”
