Improving the Management of Risks by Better Risk Communication

In an effort to make the risk management process more transparent, and to ensure better implementation of risk management decisions, OECD countries agreed to begin a new project that will explore ways to develop guidance for the effective communication of risks in the field of chemical safety. This project will involve three stages. First, information will be collected from member countries (via a survey and a literature search) to identify and describe risk communication approaches that have been used (or are currently being used). Second, a workshop will be held in Berlin, Germany in fall 2000, to discuss the results from the first stage and develop an outline for a guidance document on risk communication. Finally, a guidance document will be developed on generic principles of risk communication.
