The Role of Government Policy in Supporting the Adoption of Green/Sustainable Chemistry Innovations

This report was initiated by the OECD’s Sustainable Chemistry Issue Team. Previous work within the OECD attempted to use patent data to better understand innovative activity in sustainable chemistry. However, more information and analysis is needed to understand the dynamics of innovation in this area, especially from the industrial perspective. In order to begin the process in a preliminary way, researchers from the Yale Center for

Case Study: Assessment of an Extended Chemical Category, the Short-chain Methacrylates, Targeted on Bioaccumulation

This case study intends to illustrate this concept for the short chain methacrylates, originally composed of four chemicals, for the bioaccumulation endpoint. The OECD QSAR Toolbox identified about 160 chemicals potentially falling within the applicability domain of the original category, and the hypothesis tested in this case study is the possibility to predict the bioaccumulation potential for untested members of the category. The

Need for Research and Development Programmes in Sustainable Chemistry (2002)

A workshop was held in Tokyo (11-12 October 2000) to develop background material for a guidance document that can assist OECD countries and others develop effective research and development programmes within the context of sustainable chemistry (e.g., an institution which is researching improvements to a specific industrial process). This guidance document is based on the discussions inTokyo, and additional input by OECD Member

Preliminary Lists of PFOS, PFAS, PFOA, PFCA, their Related Compounds and Chemicals that may degrade to PFCA (2006)

The OECD conducted surveys in 2004 and 2006 on Perfluorooctane sulfonate(PFOS), Perfluoroalkyl sulfonate (PFAS), Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), related substances and products/mixtures containing these substances. The 2006 survey also included Perfluorocarboxylic Acid (PFCA) and PFCA precursors. The information sought included chemical identities, volumes of manufacture and import, use patterns of these chemicals, availability of

Technical Guidance Document on the Use of Socio-Economic Analysis in Chemical Risk Management Decision Making (2002)

This is the third in a series of documents produced by the OECD as part of its work on socio-economic analysis. The other two are: Guidance for Conducting Retrospective Studies on Socio-Economic Analysis (1999) and Framework for Integrating Socio-Economic Analysis in Chemical Risk Management Decision Making (2000).

Lead. Background and National Experience with Reducing Risk (1993)

Risk Reduction Monograph No. 1: LEAD - Background and National Experience with Reducing Risk is the first in a planned series of OECD documents on risk reduction activities for specific chemicals or groups of chemicals. These Monographs will normally include sections on: the commercial life cycle, including releases from the major point sources and categories of diffuse sources; the environmental life cycle, including qualitative and

Sustainable Chemistry: Evidence on Innovation from Patent Data

This report was initiated by the OECD’s Sustainable Chemistry Issue Team and uses patent data to investigate green chemistry innovation trends. Due to the nature of the International Patent Classification (IPC) system it was not possible to identify a broad all-encompassing green chemistry indicator. As a consequence we have investigated selected technologies which can be identified reliably using IPC classes. While these are by no
