The Conference on Enhancing the Role of SMEs in Global Value Chains (GVC), resulting in this action statement, took place in Tokyo, 31May-1June 2007. Stakeholders can play a greater role in assisting SMEs to rise to the challenges of active participation in global value chains.
Enhancing the Role of SMEs in Global Value Chains, addresses how globalisation of value chains and of large enterprises affects the role of SMEs as traditional partners, suppliers or distributors for larger firms and explores the benefits of SME participation in global value chains.
Participants at a two-day OECD-APEC conference in Athens agreed that governments should play a more active role in helping small and medium-sized firms trying to expand abroad and provide training in key areas such as marketing and intellectual property.
