Local Employment and Economic Development (LEED Programme)

Capacity building activities and networks at the OECD Trento Centre

Building effective capacity at local level is crucial to strive with new local development challenges and create sustainable, inclusive and resilient local economies and communities

  • What’s the issue?

Successful local development involves working across different policy areas to develop and implement effective local strategies. Likewise, an integrated approach to policy design, implementation and evaluation requires appropriate skills and abilities. Enabling institutions, people and places to build the knowledge and skills needed to improve their collective outcomes is an essential part of capacity building.

The Trento Centre has developed, over almost two decades, consolidated methods for capacity gap assessment and successfully collaborates with local, national and international institutions to close these gaps. Its capacity building activities, such as academies, trainings, webinars, seminars, workshops and conferences, often supported by individually developed studies and guidelines, allow participants to learn from a blend of high-level theoretical contents and practice-oriented working group sessions. Open discussions and interactions are encouraged at all stages to promote peer-to-peer learning and sharing of practices and knowledge. By bringing insights from the OECD work to thousands of sub-national policy makers and practitioners, the capacity building activities contribute to better policy action strengthening skills and local institutional capability.

  • What can the OECD offer?
  • Knowledge, tools and instruments to develop and implement local development policies.

  • Peer-to-peer learning to transfer and gain experiences within an international network.
  • Trainings and tailored activities to strengthen skills needed to develop, manage and evaluate programmes/projects.
  • Opportunity to enhance public-private governance capacity by building partnerships and networks among local administrators, stakeholders and community actors.
