Gewalt gegen Frauen, frühe Heirat, Polygamie, Genitalverstümmelung oder auch die Abtreibung weiblicher Föten sind in vielen Entwicklungsländern verbreitet. Die Rechte der Frauen zu stärken bedeutet gleichzeitig, Armut zu bekämpfen, denn die Diskriminierung benachteiligt nicht nur Frauen, sondern sie schadet auch der wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Entwicklung eines Landes. Doch der Kampf gegen die Benachteiligung von Frauen ist keine leichte Aufgabe: in vielen Länder ist die Diskriminierung von Frauen tief in sozialen Institutionen wie der Familie und den Traditionen verwurzelt.
