Economic Survey of Belgium - Press Review

1. Summary

Tackling the challenges posed by an ageing population featured prominently in the press coverage of the OECD Economic Survey of Belgium, published on 10 March 2005.

Le Soir focused on the pension system, public finances and the need to increase the employment rate. In a separate article under the heading, “Belgian electricity still expensive”, Le Soir reported the survey’s view  that the level of competition in the electricity market was too low - a criticism picked up also by Agence France-Presse.

La Libre Belgique said the survey showed that preparing for an ageing population was the main challenge facing Belgium over the coming years. These same themes were underlined by De Standaard, De Morgen, TIJD and by the Dutch daily Het Financieele Dagblad. Reuters, too, said a “greying  Belgium” needed further budgetary and labour market reforms.

The German business paper Handelsblatt  concentrated on Belgium’s vulnerability to oil price volatility  adding, however that the survey’s outlook was relatively optimistic for 2006. Switzerland’s Neue Zürcher Zeitung emphasised the need for Belgium to act quickly to meet the huge challenges it faced.
